„Ville spatiale”-Yona Friedman´s exhibition

Architect, theoretician, visual artist, an exceptional thinker of the second half of the 20th century, mentor of architects, urbanists and artists – whatever the vantage point, it always seems insufficient to describe Yona Friedman. Grandiose visions of future cities and simple manuals motivating city dwellers of the present to shape their own living environment: Yona Friedman is an advocate of the social embeddedness of random aesthetics and architectural thinking.

In the scope of the incrementally structured project, the exhibition in Trafó from 15 September will be followed by “The Architecture of Survival” international conference on participatory planning, urban ecosystem and infrastructure, and the architecture of shanty towns, organised by KÉK (Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre) on 26 October. Throughout autumn 2011, Ludwig Museum will present a Yona Friedman retrospective exhibition, involving projects that reflect the influence of Friedman’s thinking today.

Die Kuratoren präsentieren eine Auswahl von vier Spielfilmen und zwei Dokumentarfilmen aus Israel: „Fast alle Filme sind mit internationalen Preisen bedacht und werden erstmals auf einem Festival in Deutschland gezeigt, das sich ausschließlich israelischen Filmen widmet. Frei von politischen Positionen, leben diese Filme von ihren Hauptfiguren und deren persönlichen Geschichten“, sagt Bella Zchwiraschwilli, eine von drei Organisatoren des Festivals.

Eröffnungsfilm ist der Spielfilm LOST ISLANDS, ein vielfach ausgezeichnetes Werk vom Filmemacher Reshef Levi. Er erzählt die Geschichte einer Familie, die glücklich zusammen lebt bis sie von einem Geheimnis aus der Bahn geworfen wird. VASERMIL portraitiert das trostlose Leben dreier Teenager. Ein Fußballcoach rekrutiert sie für das lokale Fußballturnier, damit sehen sie eine Perspektive für ein besseres Leben. In dem Film GOYBAND trauert der ehemalige Boyband Star Bobby vergangenen Tagen hinterher. Arbeitslos und verzweifelt, bekommt er den Job zur Eröffnung des weltweit ersten orthodox-koscheren Hotels. Aber was hat ein ehemaliger Popstar gemeinsam mit der jüdisch-orthodoxen Welt? Erst einmal nichts. Der Dokumentarfilm PICKLES begleitet acht israelisch-arabische Witwen bei der Gründung ihres Unternehmens, einem Gurkenanbau und -handel. DIPLOMAT, ebenfalls Dokumentarfilm, stellt ein Hotel in den Mittelpunkt. Einst schönste 5 Sterne Herberge Jerusalems, ist es heute Zufluchtsort für über 600 Immigranten der ehemaligen Sowjetunion.

Die Filme werden mit Englischer Untertitelung in der Originalsprache Hebräisch gezeigt.

From the 7th to the 10th of October 2010, this year's abc art berlin contemporary will deal with the complex theme of film and the related aspect of the performative. Recent years have been witness to a heightened awareness of the intimate interweaving between film and contemporary art. Film has exerted increased influence on the other arts and, alongside the classical disciplines of painting and sculpture, has become a central component of current artistic discourse. Furthermore, film has introduced dynamic new elements into our understanding of image, space and performativity.

In light of this development, the goal of abc this year is not simply to present leading, international productions, or works, that deal with the topic of film. Rather, the exhibition's aim is to engage with the full complexity of questions posed by film, investigating and revealing the dynamic exchange that has developed between artistic mediums. The spectrum of works shown at abc will therefore range from traditional film projections, to videos, installations, collages, photography, light sculptures, and performances.

Marc Glöde, Berlin based curator, critic, and film historian, is the curator of the abc art berlin contemporary exhibition 2010. He has organized numerous international film festivals and programs, as well as exhibitions focusing on subjects such as Film and Architecture or Film and Art. Since 2008, Glöde has been the curator of the film program at Art Basel.

abc art berlin contemporary emerged three years ago as a free, new format between exhibition and gallery event, in response to shifts within the discourse of contemporary exhibition practice as well as out of a desire to experiment and innovate. The founders of the annual Gallery Weekend Berlin initiated the event. Each year, the exhibition takes place in a new location and addresses a specific curatorial issue, bringing together works by leading contemporary artists that respond to certain developments in contemporary art practice, reflecting tendencies in critical discourse as well as aspects of the art market.

This simple rule keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. This time we will also hear about the Venice Architecture Biennale and see some Hungarian designers who were introduced by WAMP at the Helsinki Design Week.

Some of the artists and curators who have contributed to Behind the Counter will talk about the creative processes in whose focus stand social, economic and political issues and phenomena. How much research is needed to prepare such a work? How well-founded do they need to be scientifically? What is the relationship of the scientific and the artistic aspect of these works? How can certain space, period- and subject-specific works be incorporated in the texture of a new exhibition and discourse?

The Emerging Art Fair
After last year's successful edition in the main hall of Tempelhof Airport, PREVIEW BERLIN – The Emerging Art Fair is once again moving to Hangar2 for its sixth edition. 60 exhibitors from 19 countries were accepted for the PREVIEW BERLIN 2010, and will provide an outstanding overview on the art of our time. This year's fair concept, which was developed out of the experience from the last five years, is considered to be both a summarisation of previous fair concepts and proclamation of a new fair format for 2011.
Hailed by the Tagesspiegel in September 2009 as the "hub of Berlin's autumn art fairs", the PREVIEW BERLIN has advanced to become the crucial event of the Berlin fair week. Last year, more than 10,000 art enthusiasts visited the fair for sculpture and installation in the monumental main hall of Tempelhof Airport.
PREVIEW BERLIN – the platform for promising Berlin-based, national and international galleries as well as independent art spaces – celebrated its first edition in 2005. The fair is directed by two gallerists and one artist: Kristian Jarmuschek (Galerie Jarmuschek + Partner), Rüdiger Lange (loop – raum für aktuelle kunst) and Ralf Schmitt (MyVisit.to).
The directors consider this year's focus on art from Eastern European countries to be an important enrichment of Berlin's fair week – an element which had been missing until now.
"Berlin is one of the most important gates to Eastern Europe. Many Eastern European artists have found a second home in Berlin," explains Ralf Schmitt. "Berlin, as a creative capital in Europe, can no longer ignore the influence that can clearly be felt in the city due to artists from these countries," adds Rüdiger Lange. "There are up-and-coming art scenes and high-quality art in these countries. Our task as an international fair for emerging art is it to seek out and present these trends," Lange continues.
Similar to the 2007 and 2008 editions, the PREVIEW BERLIN will once again be held in Hangar2 of Tempelhof Airport this year.

A total of 60 exhibitors will be included in the PREVIEW BERLIN 2010. With participants from 19 countries, it will be the most international edition of the fair to date.
Under the focal point of Eastern Europe, several galleries and project spaces will be presented, including Galerija Marisall from Zagreb, Mâksla XO from Riga, PROGRAM Gallery from Warsaw, Krokus Gallery from Bratislava, Alkatraz Gallery and Equrna from Ljubljana and ACB Galeria from Budapest.

Die Illusion der Rebellion

Die sechste Einzelausstellung der Reihe „Super Reactive Subjects im Senatsreservenspeicher hinterfragt mit den Arbeiten von Nasan Tur die (Un)möglichkeiten subversiven Handelns. Zwischen Revolutionsästhetik, -romantik und -praxis sucht der international renommierte Künstler die unscharfe Grenze zwischen Realität und Schein der Rebellion: Durch kleinste Eingriffe, beispielsweise in den Kontext subversiver Praktiken, werden deren Brüche und Zwiespalte sichtbar.Im Zentrum der Ausstellung steht eine eigens geschaffene, ortspezifische Videoinstallation. Sie lässt die Besucher den existentiellen Charakter eines subversiven Vorhabens erahnen, dessen Ziel jedoch im Dunklen bleibt. Die Illusion der Rebellion zeigt sich gerade in dieser endlosen Vorbereitung, in dem andauernden Aufbruch mit ungewissem Zweck und Ausgang. Zusätzlich wird, wie in vielen anderen Arbeiten des Künstlers, ein Bezug zum öffentlichen Stadtraum hergestellt. Im Licht der Rebellion verschmelzen Kunst- und Realraum. Die Arbeiten von Nasan Tur wurden seit 1999 in zahlreichen internationalen Ausstellungen gezeigt, von der Schirn Kunsthalle, über die Istanbul Biennale bis hin zur Einzelschau im Stuttgarter Kunstmuseum. Sein breites Werk wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, zuletzt erhielt er das Stipendium der Stiftung Kunstfonds.
